$15 million Australia-Canada partnership for food security in Africa
A strategic partnership between the newly-launched Australian International Food Security Centre and Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) was announced on Friday 30 November to improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa.
Senator The Hon Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs, made the announcement at the opening of the international forum, “Food Security in Africa: Bridging Research and Practise”. He also launched the Australian International Food Security Centre (AIFSC).
“The Joint Research Program on Agriculture and Food Security is a $15 million competitive grants scheme that will be supported over 4 years by the AIFSC and Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The AIFSC and IDRC will each contribute $7.5 million to fund research activities in areas vital to achieving long-term food security, including nutrition, post harvest loss and water use,” said Mellissa Wood, Director of the AIFSC.
