The AIFSRC has released a new brochure. This brochure gives a comprehensive snapshot on who we are and our efforts and achievements towards our goal of helping smallholder farmers and other poor households gain access to sufficient, accessible and nutritious food. Read about our programs and current research projects, and our aim to gain a better understanding of how to accelerate the delivery and adoption of agricultural research innovations.

Early in 2013, the AIFSRC, approved the second major project within its Sustainable and productive farming systems program. This project is titled, “Increasing irrigation water productivity in Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe through on-farm monitoring, adaptive management and agricultural innovation platforms“– a bit of a mouthful – but as the title suggests, technology will be mixed for a participatory approach success.

Dr. Lindiwe Majele Sibanda has been awarded the 2013 Yara Prize which honors youth entrepreneurship and policy advocacy.

Dr Sibanda is the CEO of the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) and a project partner in our irrigation project. Dr Sibanda shares the honour of the Yarra Prize with Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu, Founder and CEO of the Smallholders Foundation in Nigeria.

The AIFSC was delighted to host officials from Republic of South Sudan, Professor Aggrey Abate, Vice Chancellor of University of Juba and Dr Samson Paul Baba, Director General for Primary Health Care, Ministry of Health, who are visiting Australia to discuss agricultural and health issues with Australian government agencies (such as DFAT and AusAID) and academic colleagues.

Canada and Australia join forces to improve food security in Africa: $15 million project call launched

Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the AIFSC launched a call for concept notes, Cultivate Africa’s Future (CultiAF), a 4-year, CA$15 million research partnership designed to combat hunger in Sub-Saharan Africa by harnessing the potential for innovation among the region’s smallholder farmers, the majority of whom are women.

On 8-9 July, AIFSC Executive Officer Bronnie Anderson-Smith participated in the Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) Forum, The Power of Partnerships in Sydney, Australia. The Forum brought together representatives from the AAUN member universities in Africa and Australia.

The AIFSC is thrilled that our partner World Vision Australia has been recognised for their Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration work in West Africa. They were awarded equal second place in the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), 2013 Land for Life Awards. They were ranked second out of 137 entries from around the world.
